My favorite part was when you stated, "I encouraged him to look at a career with work values that matched his own." This is a sign of a great career practitioner. You saw his potential and you were not fearful of his expertise and learning from him. He was probably grateful for your help and support. I agree with your comments about keeping your feelings in check too, but that is sometimes easier said than done but I'm glad you recognized that.
