Week 2 Discussion

1. What were your motives for helping this person?

My motive for helping this person was so that she could continue to be successful in her job, which would in turn help the teams continued success.

2. Did you benefit from this relationship in any way? How?

Yes, I feel that I benefited from the relationship in two ways:

- I was able to help someone learn a new skill

- I became someone that this person trusted and also became a future resource for them and others

3. What was your role in the helping relationship? In what way do you think you helped this person? Looking back, is there anything that you might have done differently?

I became a trainer in this relationship.  I helped this person overcome her fear of asking for assistance and also her fear of being introduced to and taught new things. The one thing I may have done differently would have been to check in on her earlier.  I distinctly remember watching her body language and facial expressions shift in a team meeting where the introduction of the new technology was announced.

4. Was there anything that this person did, said, or believed that you did not agree with? How did you react?

One thing that I did not agree with was, the person stated that she would not be able to learn the new technology introduced to the team because she was too old and she did not want to take up anyone's time. I assured her that no one is ever too old to learn something new and I gladly offered assistance.

5. Did you learn anything from this relationship?

Yes, I learned that checking on teammates or peers from time to time is important.  They may be struggling with something in silence because they are too afraid to ask for assistance.

Hi Nicole,

I wanted to circle back to this post. While we already discussed this during our 1:1 session, I wanted to check in to see how you were doing with checking in on your teammates and peers. Have you figured out a way to incorporate these check-ins into your daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly schedule? Have you established a protocol for this and/or brought this to the attention of your superiors as a potential opportunity? Just a thought.

Great information in this discovery.

Best,

Charise
