 1. What were your motives for helping this person?

Recently an acquaintance reached out to me needing help to decide to transfer to a full time job.  My motive would be to share my knowledge and experience so she could make the best decision for herself.

2. Did you benefit from this relationship in any way? How?

I didn’t benefit from this relationship, however if she left this could create a negative impact on my previous employer.

3. What was your role in the helping relationship?  In what way do you think you helped this person? Looking back, is there anything that you might have done differently?

My role could be viewed as a mentor.  I had previous experience and knowledge of the job.  I was honest and explained the Pros & Cons that I had experienced.  I was willing to share with her the negative aspects of the jobs.  I also suggested for her to check with human resources for more information.  The more information the better chance you can make the best decision.

4. Was there anything that this person did, said, or believed that you did not agree with? How did you react?

She didn’t want to involve human resources because she didn’t think they would be helpful.  I disagreed with her and explained the benefits of checking with HR.

5. Did you learn anything from this relationship?

I was surprised that others suggested for her to get my input.  I learned sharing your knowledge, experience and thoughts can have a great influence on a life changing decision.

Hello Lisa,

Thank you for submitting your example of being a mentor. I think that when we are known for being a resource and someone that people can turn to then that is truly an honor and it speaks very highly of you. The individual receiving your assistance seemed to have ideas of her own, so I like the fact that you went through a list of pros and cons to assist her with the decision making processes. The fact that you did not tell her what to do was great too because ultimately our students, clients, and people that we mentor have to live with the decision.

I actually do think you may have benefited from the relationship - - think about it, every time we connect and use our "career" skills we learn about new resources and new ways to help people with this process. It was not a typical "benefit" but it certainly helped you to hone in and use your skills.

Nice job! Keep up the good work!
