This was extremely helpful and brought an interesting perspective to the conversation. Thank you for sharing that you recognized that you could have spent more time with the student. I suspect in retrospect that you have thought since then how you might have connected on a deeper level with this student to build even more trust.
Sometimes, even when we have developed strong relationships with our clients they still may choose a different direction than we have suggested. We don't have to agree but we can be supportive, which it sounds like you were with this student.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I once had a student that I helped find a job as a Professor. He trusted me to an extent but refused to use my advice about how to build his network. It was difficult for him, later on, to find work because of this. I had to realize he just wasn't there yet. Oh well...we try!
