1. What were your motives for helping this person?
*My motives for helping this person was connected to the person having the ability to meet her goals in law school.
2. Did you benefit from this relationship in any way? How?
*I did not benefit from this relationship because I am not impacted by the person's admission into law school; however, I worked diligently to source materials needed in order to present the best package to perspective schools. My efforts when working with the student were reflective of what I would want someone to do for me if in the same situation.
3. What was your role in the helping relationship? In what way do you think you helped this person? Looking back, is there anything that you might have done differently?
*My role in the helping relationship was encouragement, writing and/editing of the personal statement, assisting with research that spoke directly to the student's requests, being an active listener and asking questions to guide the student to scribe cohesive responses to pertinent questions...I know I helped the person with writing and editing her personal statement...Looking back, I might have put more emphasis on the student attending the personal statement writing workshop hosted by the Black Law School Student Association at Georgetown University.
4. Was there anything that this person did, said, or believed that you did not agree with? How did you react?
*This person did not listen to my suggestions pertaining to how to make effective connections to your audience...I reacted by asking permission to forward her personal statement to someone who sits on the admission board for a prominent law school in the area so that the student could receive a second opinion.
5. Did you learn anything from this relationship?
*I learned students need more support than they should ask for; moreover, students are not as prepared for graduate work as they think, thus they need support transitioning through the process of admissions and hopefully acceptance. In addition, I learned advising students of a back up plan is essential to the student's growth as a healthy member of society.
