View recent representation for children of color served by OKDHS, in comparison to the representation of CASA Staff and Volunteers.
Data shows the over-representation of minority children within the child welfare and foster care system. The root of this phenomenon is complex and deeply rooted in our culture and is systemic in nature. But what if we were somehow able to remove race from the equation when the decision to remove a child from his/her home is made? The following is a Ted Talk about exciting work which is being done in this area. As you watch this brief video, please keep in mind the speaker is a researcher. (We acknowledge the presentation style is measured, not to detract from the value of the content!)
The problems surrounding disproportionality are not limited to Child Welfare. In fact there may be a connection to the representation of children of color in foster care , and the representation of people of color in prison. Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of Black imprisonment in the US. Since the onset of the Covid Pandemic, the rate of Black Oklahomans being imprisoned has increased.
